four things to check before you save
The poster frame is the first thing a visitor sees
It stays up until the video starts playing, and on mobile it is often the only image shown at all. Treat it as a photo you chose deliberately, not as an accident of where the video happened to begin.
Avoid motion blur
Frames in the middle of a pan or a fast movement go soft at the edges. Step forward one frame at a time to a point where both the camera and the subject are still.
Keep the subject in focus
Choose a frame where the face or the product reads clearly, ideally with open eyes and nothing cutting through the shot. Avoid frames mid-fade or mid-cut: they come out dark and grey.
Save in the right format
JPEG is enough for photography and gives small files. WebP gives smaller files still at the same sharpness. Save PNG only when the image contains text, graphics or hard edges that will not survive compression.
